Honorable Mention Family Tree Kathy Paupore Mute screams swallowed, absent mother bruises without fists while father plants his acorns, small and cold in his daughter's womb. She holds them there not knowing what they are. Powerless, she knows no other way. Life is fraught with perils, her mind with trap doors and side alleys of no escape. Remorseless, the father paints from twisted roots his daughter's body in his limbs. Branches grope upward, mouth agape in silent fury. Anger rises up and through her veins, lodges in her heart. She regurgitates, acorns fall from her mouth, defiant, words rage to empty the silence. |
